Getting nasty in Nagoya
Nagoya, Japan, is known for being the birthplace of Toyota and culinary delights like Miso Katsu. You can add crazy-ass cars shows to that notoriety, like the annual Nagoya Auto Trend. This year's exhibition attracted manufacturers from all over Japan. Companies like J's Racing, Pioneer Electronics and all of the major Japanese auto makers had huge displays that filled the Port Messe Nagoya convention center.

The expression "freaky" can be used to define something good or something bad. The 2008 Fukuoka Auto Salon seemed to inspire both types of freakiness from attendees of the automotive aftermarket showcase.

Even though we're in the middle of the off-season for racing, the action still continues on tracks throughout Japan. Wintertime usually means festivals, and everyone who's anyone in the world of Japanese motorsports likes to throw circuit-based parties to thank their loyal fans for their dedication over the year. These last few months alone we went to track days from companies like Nismo, HKS, Honda and now Toyota.

In 1973, America, Western Europe and Japan were suffering through the adverse effects of an OPEC-triggered oil crisis. The '73 oil crisis caused major concern worldwide about rising fuel prices, gasoline rationing and long lines at the pump. Even motorsports' biggest spectacles, such as the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500, made modifications to their events to reflect the trend in fuel conservation that year.

JDM Confidential-JDM Confidential: Rev Speed Tsukuba Time Attack
When Rev Speed magazine decides to throw a time attack, the best of the best come running. As I walked down the pits at Tsukuba for the 18th installment of the Japanese magazine's annual "Super Battle", it was very surreal. It was like watching magazine covers come to life. Not only was it a pleasure to see these fine machines in person, but everyone in attendance was treated to these legends battling it out on the world-famous Tsukuba Circuit.

JDM Confidential-JDM Confidential: Honda Racing Thanks Day
It's November 23, 2007, 2:30am when my alarm goes off. I get up, look out the window and see a full-on snow storm. Being that this was the first snowfall of the year, I don't yet have snow tires on my car. I was sitting on my bed contemplating if I should press on and risk life and limb navigating the icy touge outside on bald tires, plus drive 5 hours to a Honda Racing fan appreciation event.

JDM Confidential - JDM Confidential: 2007 M. Yokota Fall Rally
JDM Confidential-JDM Confidential: 2007 M. Yokota Fall Rally
About 80 miles north of Tokyo deep in the countryside of Gunma, Japan, the 2007 M. Yokota Classic Car Rally stirred up a huge buzz in the normally quite and sleepy town of Mt. Harunasan. Having many more pre-registered rally participants than anticipated, M. Yokota had to make a last-minute location change. The Rally is usually based at M. Yokota's classic car, toy and candy museum, but Mr. Yokota quickly realized his parking lot would not be able to accommodate that many cars.

The tuning landscape in Japan is one wealthy in 1,000hp Nissans and Toyotas. So great are their numbers, they have almost become the standard, akin to the Mustang and Corvette phenomena we see stateside. That's why it was truly surprising to run across this mega-horsepowered beast in Osaka, not because it can roll with the best of them but because it isn't one of the ubiquitous aforesaid marques.

Sometimes you run into the coolest things by pure accident. In this case, I was searching for the latest and greatest feature way out in the boonies, and when I arrived I heard the faint sound of motors screaming under load in the distance. After checking the map, I realized that I was in the city of Motegi. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Oh, crap! I must be really close to the Twin Ring Motegi circuit! Without hesitation I took a chance and went to check out what was going on at the track.

The final stop at the Mega Web auto theme park is the Toyota City Showroom. Being that I don't drive a Toyota, I was a little hesitant to venture into this part of the Mega Web. After I walked around the Toyota City Showroom my automotive biasness melted away. Just imagine something the size of a two story Super Wal-Mart filled with latest goodies from this premier auto manufacture. If you consider yourself to be a car nut the Toyota City Showroom has something for you.

After a long week of playing tour guide for my visiting family from Los Angeles, it was time for my wife and me to relax. Having recently picked up a brochure for a place called the "History Garage," a museum devoted to restored classic cars from the '50s to the '70s, we decided this would be an ideal time to check it out.
